To ensure the accuracy of N-Min, GrowHow:

  • Work with one of the few remaining independent soil laboratories in the country. Hill Court Farm Research is run by two expert research scientists: Dr Laurence Blake and
    Dr Mechteld Blake-Kalff
  • Annually cross check the accuracy of the calibration model that estimates how much Nitrogen will come from the 30-60 cm soil profile against actual soil samples received for SMN analysis. The results speak for themselves - 90% of samples are within 20 kg which is exceptionally accurate

  • Calculates crop balances on some 250 sites. To do this all the sites must have used N-Min & N-Calc in the spring so that Soil Mineral Nitrogen, Additional Available Nitrogen and crop Nitrogen levels are known. Farm records are used to provide details of the actual amount of Nitrogen applied. Finally just prior to harvest crop samples are taken to calculate how much Nitrogen the crop has recovered

crop balance

The crop balance identifies if the crop has been under or over fertilised.   This is the method used to check the accuracy of our fertiliser recommendations.
